It is finally raining.
For someone like me, who rather spend my time outside rather than inside, it may not be all that fun that is raining. But I am happy it does. Cause suddenly there’s no need to walk around with a hose and turn on the sprinklers to water the whole garden every afternoon.
Bummer though that the rain stopped me from playing around with my new “party camera” which arrived on Friday.
Except for the new action camera I picked up a couple of months ago this is the first camera I bought since like 2019 or so. Not bad for a girl who used to make her living out of photography.
Someone might wonder what the definition of a party camera may be, and for me it is a smaller camera with nifty features that look innocent enough for people to not pay attention to it and also is easy to bring along where ever one may go!
In all it is the same idea as in behind the mind of a street photographer. Except my party camera, this is the 3d generation, normally goes to horse events.
I know it may sound dodgy to not want to be seen as a photographer, but it really isn’t.
My first generation party camera for horse events was a screaming pink Nikon 1 J2. No one took it, or me, seriously when I walked around with it and nothing else.
Still it made some of the most unique photos I ever did and ruled events like spoga Horse where some of the trade stand owners are not comfortable with cameras around.
Cause when people don’t notice you, one normally gets the best shots and I love the “behind the scene” concept of photography, and will make a bold claim I was one of the first ones in the equestrian world to explore the emotions and such rather than the big jumps.
Now everybody does it, so if one would like to stick out in the current climate of horses and equestrian sport’s photography one better be more creative than ever.
Question is do we really need yet another photo of someone pointing downwards to their horses neck after crossing the “finish line”, or yet another video clip with a slow motion sequence over a fence? I don’t know.
I know plenty of photographers who just like me gave up their photo career during the pandemic or in close relation to it. Photographers just like me, who now pick up a steady income elsewhere and do freelance photography on the side.
We know the reality of photography and lt me tell you this, some things are really weird to us.
The big topic of discussion tend to be how the modern photographers can afford the lifestyle they tend to be living.
A qualified guess is plenty of them actually have a trust fund behind them.
Cause when breaking down the numbers in regards to camera gear, editing programs, travel costs and all other expenses and place them in relation to potential income it doesn’t make sense what so ever.
I highlighted travel costs cause travelling seem to be the new thing. There are more than a handful of these “content creators” that follow the big shows around the world.
Shows that spit out free photos from the organising committee for anyone to use. But, unlike pretty girl influencers who can photoshop themselves into various locations, photographers don’t have that luxury, just yet.
They need to be on location to make that shot, so how do they afford to fly all over the world to get it? Something to think about.
Cheers Hanna 😸
